DEHORNING
There is a lot of cruelty that happens with dairy cows. Some cows have horns and others are not, it just so happens to depend on their genetics. Female calves who have horns however are dehorned to reduce the risk of injury to other cows. The horns are removed using saws, sharp wires, hot irons, or caustic chemicals. This harms the cow itself. It is very painful and sometimes they never heal. In addition to this, people prefer horned cows more and removing their horns to make them more suitable.
CRUELTY
Another thing that happens is that right after they are born, calves are separated from their cow and this causes them both extreme distress. They are unable to nurse their young and are treated like machines. Male calves are usually sold to the veal industry and are kept in confined spaces, which is bad because they are meant to walk around in a field. The calves that are taken away are fed replacements for milk, which in some cases is cattle blood so that the mother's milk is not wasted. The cows will be killed within months after being born.
MILK
Cows are treated like machines and produce 4 times what they normally should. To produce this much milk, cows are pumped with hormones and antibiotics. The female cows are artificially inseminated to make them lactate. After they give birth, their calf is taken away from them and 10 months later they are seminated again.
LIVING CONDITIONS
Cows are confined to tight spaces with concrete floors and some spend their entire lived standing in a very crowded barn. Standing for too long leads to leg joints being swollen, ulcerated and them being exhausted. They are forced to live amid their own feces, some even knee-deep in waste. The stress of these conditions shorten their lives greatly, and once they are rendered worthless, they are sent to be slaughtered.
